2. Look for the Cancel link or Expires on date.

a. If you see a Cancel link under the subscription name, select Cancel.

b. If you don't see an option to cancel, automatic renewal might be disabled. Your subscription will end on the Expires on date.

NOTE: After your subscription is canceled, Office will run in View Only or reduced functionality mode. In View Only mode, you'll still be able to open and print documents, however you won’t be able to edit them or create new ones.

Office 365: This suite of Microsoft products can be accessed through a web browser from any computer or device. The personal and business plans have very different features. Personal plans have a limit on the number of devices that can access Office 365.

Two of the three business plans allow using Office on up to five tablets and phones for every Office install. Office Online has fewer features than subscription-based Office 365 and it’s free.

Regardless of which type of plan you choose, Office 365 stores information in the cloud and comes with a monthly or annual subscription fee. When payments stop, the service stops.

Outlook.com: Outlook.com replaced Hotmail as Microsoft’s free Web-based email service that you can access through any web browser. Outlook.com is part of Office Online, which has limited functionality compared to Office 365 and Office for PC. Outlook.com and Office Online store information in the cloud.

Microsoft Office for PC or Mac: This suite comes on a CD or as a downloadable file that you install and run on a PC or Mac. All versions of Office except Student come with Outlook Email, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, and Tasks. Files and emails are stored on a local drive rather than in the cloud.

Beware that Office 2013 can be used with Office Online and OneDrive. You can work around this by not signing in Office Online. Unlike with Office 365, users pay once and use it forever.

How to transfer Outlook Calendar and Contacts to phones

Although Outlook.com and Office 365 store your information in the cloud, it allows you to access your Calendar, People (Contacts), Tasks, and Notes from anywhere and on any device. The downside is that won’t work as fast or as conveniently as having your Contacts and Calendar information saved in your phone’s own Calendar and Contacts apps. You also need an Internet or Wi-Fi connection to access the information through the web browser.

As previously mentioned, Microsoft Office 2013 can save your personal data in the cloud when you use it with Office Online and OneDrive. To avoid the cloud, don’t log into Office Online through Office PC or Mac software.

Microsoft Office 2010 and older do not save anything in the cloud. They keep your Outlook Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes on your PC. But you can’t access the information from your phones and tablets unless you use third party software.
