25 ways Banktivity is better than Quicken on a Mac. The latest version of Quicken — Quicken 2017 for Mac — lacks upgrade pricing, a free trial version, full investment support, envelope budgeting, loan amortization, multi-currency support, QIF data import and many other key features found in Banktivity. Quicken’s Smart Payee feature can help. In the Download Transactions window, select the payee name and type over it with a new name (I chose Safeway ); you can also make changes in the Category and Memo fields. Then click on the Record button. Quicken saves the new Smart Payee name for the transaction.

I'm creating custom report and when I include the Memo field, the report is displaying information in that field that doesn't appear in the actual transaction. It appears to be pulling information from a previous transaction memo field, combining it with the actual transaction, and then displaying both.
In the example below, see the 10/22/18 Lowe's transaction that SHOULD say only 'Lights for Cabin' in the memo field.
However, it's picking up the memo from some other Lowe's transaction that had 'Kitchen Cabinet Hinges' in the memo field. In looking through that register, it seems the 'Kitchen Cabinet Hinges' transaction was the previous Lowe's transaction in the register.
Checking now the Amazon transaction on 11/17/18. The memo should read 'Charly: Shirts/Book H&M: Wemo Plugs.' However, it has on the end 'H's Headphones.' That memo information is ALSO from the previous Amazon transaction in this register.
So sometimes it puts this extraneous memo text at the beginning of the report memo field, sometimes at the end - I can't find rhyme or reason why.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dawne, in the screenshot you have posted, in your Flagship VISA register, I don't see the Memo/Note column as visible. Please add it (click on Columns in the lower right toolbar, and check Memo/Notes). I suspect that on that 10.22 transaction, you'll see the Memo/Notes column shows 'Kitchen Cabinet Hinges'. Right?
Here's what's happening: when you enter a new transaction for Lowes, Quicken calls up a previous transaction for Lowes, and you proceed to change the amount and edit the split lines for the new transaction you're entering. But if the Memo/Notes field is hidden, you're not seeing the text from the old transaction there.
How to prevent this? First, once you've made the column visible, you'll see it can can edit it each time. Alternatively, there's a very useful hidden feature in data entry: in the Payee field, once you enter Lowes, press OPTION-TAB instead of just Tab to move to the next field. Option-Tab will retain the Payee, but will NOT pull in any of the details of a prior transaction. This way, with a Payee like Lowes where each purchase is probably something different, you can just enter what you need without having to blank out/edit a prior transaction's amount, memo, and splits.

Jacobs, thanks for the quick reply.. I included in the screen shot the 10/22 transaction, showing the splits and the memo field - it clearly shows only 'Lights for Cabin' is included in the memo field.
The Option-Tab feature is handy to know for the future.. just wondering how I can fix this in my report. There are actually three transactions in this report that are doing it (Lowes, Amazon, Wegmans). I've checked the actual transactions on each and the memo fields are correct in the transactions - just not on the report.
Also it may be important to note, that in all the memo field errors, those transactions are all SPLIT transactions with a previous transaction with a memo field entry.
For the transactions that DON'T have this memo field error (ie: the two Costco entries), those are ALSO split transactions, but the previous transactions to each of those do not have a memo field entry.
One could then deduce that the circumstances might include that the transaction is a split transaction and that the previous register transaction for the same payee has a non-null memo field.
    Hope this helps.

Dawne, you're referring to the Memo/Notes for the split line. I'm talking about Memo/Notes for the main transaction -- the blue bar in your screen shot. I'm saying that if you make Memo/Notes field visible in this register, you will see the 'hidden' text you're seeing on the report. In reports, Quicken attempts to provide as much data as possible, so it shows the Memo/Notes for the main transaction AND the split.

In case I haven't been clear enough, there is a Memo/Notes field for transactions, and then when you have splits in a transaction, there is a Memo/Notes field for each split. From your screen shot, you appear to have the Memo/Notes in your register hidden, so you're not seeing those Memos/Notes. But when you re-use a memoized payee, Quicken is dutifully copying the Memo/Notes used previously for that Payee.
Here's a Lowe's transaction in my register. Note the Memo/Notes column to the far right, and note that it is different text than the individual split lines.
To 'fix' this, you're going to need to go back and edit some of your older transactions to blank out or change the Memo/Notes on the main transactions, where you weren't aware you had been copying incorrect text from prior transactions.

OOOHHHH I'm so sorry. I get it now. I turned that on and yes, there's previous text in there. I assumed that if you had memo fields in a split transaction you didn't have a memo for the main transaction.
So on a related issue - when I download transactions, it sometimes will populate that main transaction field with text.. is there a way to turn that off (ie: see the Wegmans transaction in report screen capture).

Not to beat a dead horse..
I've corrected the main memo fields, but this one still giving me fits. I deleted the report, closed Quicken, reopened and recreated the report.
See Amazon transaction of 11/17/18 - still showing the erroneous 'H's Headphones' at the end.
To fix it, I had to delete the transaction and reenter (and I used the Option-Tab).
Thanks for the help and tips

I don't download most of my transactions, so I'm not as expert in that area as some other users who might jump in here. What shows up in the Memo/Notes field may depend on the data your financial institution is providing. When Quicken downloads, it attempts to do some cleanup of Payee names, and I think what you're seeing is the result of than clean-up: 'WEGMANS 44 LEESBURG' is likely what your Visa institution is providing as the payee name; Quicken 'cleans' that up to 'Wegmans', but then puts the original name in the Memo/Notes field. If you click on your Wegmans transaction and then open the Transactions Inspector (View > Show Inspector), you can see the FI Payee and FI Notes that will show exactly the data provided from your financial institution.

    Apple

If you click on Splits for that transaction, is there anything on the split lines?

Drat, should have checked that before I deleted the transaction.. but good thought.
  1. @Mitch: This is using the 'old reports' which have been around since the modern Quicken for Mac debuted with Quicken 2015. But users with Quicken 2017 and 2018 have another path forward, with the'New Report' reports that are the first iteration of the new reports engine that will eventually replace all the old reports.
  2. David, we're all just fellow Quicken users here, and in 99.8% of the cases, we have no insight into the rationale of the developers. For instance, some of the Quicken Mac reports that can export to Excel inexplicably omit the Memo/Notes field entirely; it seems like a simple bug to fix, but it hasn't been addressed.
  3. Quicken Essentials for Mac is Macintosh version of popular Quicken personal finance management software. It contains almost all features of Quicken for Windows. Quicken financial software helps you track, plan and manage your finances and assets — from basic budgeting and bill paying to complex investing to cataloging your belongings.
  4. Install the latest version of Quicken for Mac Select the Start from a Quicken Mac 2007 file option, even if your file is from a version that's older than 2007. See the 'Start from an existing Quicken 2007 file' section in this FAQ for information about converting to a new version of Quicken for Mac.
  5. Apr 01, 2018  I am new to Quicken. I am using Quicken Rental Property Manager 2017. There are columns for both memos and notes. The information automatically downloaded from my bank accounts into the memo column isn't very useful and doesn't match the memos I write on the bank bill pay system.
Sorry. Can't reproduce the error. My test check recorded successfully. I tabbed from field to field, even after filling in the Memo, then mouse-clicked Record.

1) Let's try some 'Troubleshooting 101' to
ensure the Quicken software is installed and updated properly.

Quicken Canada users: Do not download the first set of patch or Mondo Patch
files in the above links. They apply to Quicken US users only. Instead, scroll
down the webpage to the Quicken Canada section and download that file. For 2015
and 2016 it may be hiding behind a clickable word 'here'.

( * minimum required
release number, may be higher, subject to change without notice)

Please do this even
if you are on the latest release already:
Locate the US or Canada Mondo Patch
file applicable to your version of Quicken in the links above.
Download it and save it to disk.
Temporarily disable your Antivirus software for the entire duration of the next
step:
- Open the Downloads folder. Right-click the downloaded patch file. Click
'Run as Administrator' to execute the installation program.
This will replace any Quicken software modules with a known consistent release
level and, hopefully, eliminate any software corruption or errors during
installation as a cause of this issue.

2) Validate

Quicken For Mac Downloads To F1 Notes Instead Of Memo Template

You should validate
your Quicken data file. It may have become damaged over time or if you ever had
crashes, hang-ups or loops while running Quicken. Repeated crashes may
eventually render a data file 'broken beyond repair'.
Please run this procedure, skipping no steps:
- Make a copy of your data file: Click File / File Operations / Copy. Do not change any Copy Option settings. Save
file under a new name in same folder as current Quicken data file. (The Copy process appears to be performing a
record-by-record copy of the data file and not just a simple binary image copy.
This has been reported as recovering some otherwise not repairable
files)
- Open the copied file in Quicken.
- Click File / File Operations / Validate and Repair. Click 'Validate
File' and 'Rebuild investing lots', check to make sure the
copied file is being validated, click OK. Let it run.
- Fix any errors logged as not repaired by Quicken.
- Now close and restart Quicken using this new file and try your failing action
again. If it works, keep using the new file and abandon the old one.
